Assessment and Reporting

Assessment is an ongoing and integral part of teaching and learning. Assessment provides evidence for teachers to make judgments against the achievement standards and monitor progress of each young person. To maximise outcomes for each young person, teachers use ongoing assessment evidence to adjust the teaching and learning sequence. Teachers make on-balance judgements about the overall quality of a young person’s work demonstrated through the portfolio of evidence collected.

Assessment provides timely and useful information that informs the quality of the teaching and how and what the young people learn. It is essential to ascertain what young people know and can do, to provide next steps in their learning, and to identify strengths and achievements.

Progress Report

The Sycamore School provides parents/carers with a Progress Report at the end of Semester 1 and 2. As per the Australian Education Regulation requirements, it reports the young person’s achievement by curriculum level and achievement level to the parent/carer. The purpose of the Progress Report is to provide a summary of achievement against the Australian Curriculum achievement standard, within a modified program of learning. The Achievement Level reflects the demonstrated understanding of targeted elements of the achievement standard and degree of support provided to the young person for the curriculum level they were taught.

Celebration of Achievement Folio

The Celebration of Achievement Folio (CAF) is completed for each young person twice per year, at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. The CAF celebrates achievements made as well as the learning experiences had by the young person across the semester. Work samples and photo evidence of participation across the subjects are embedded and shared in the CAF.

The Sycamore School acknowledges that there are different ways in which the community talks about autism – some use identity first or autism affirming language, ‘Autistic person’ and some use person first language, ‘person with autism’.  Here at The Sycamore School we believe that our young people should be celebrated for their strengths, that they are valued and empowered to be proud of the unique capabilities’ autism brings to their life.  The Sycamore School is using autism affirming language.

We would like to acknowledge the Quandamooka people, Traditional Custodians of the land our School is on, and pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging. We extend our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia.
